Middle School enjoyed a two night experiential at the majestic Westminister Woods. Everyone had a wonderful time connecting, reflecting, and learning new things! Students were introduced to new activities and got to challenge themselves as individuals and as a group. Some activities included a ropes courses, zip-lining through the beautiful redwoods, and geo rock hunting in the creek. They went day and night hiking, jumped on a cargo net, and went on a giant see saw. They also did more typical campout activities such as craft-making, singing around the campfire and of course lots of exploring! We are so proud of all all of our students for trying out everything on this trip with an open mind, they all expressed positivity around the trip and the experiential overall was truly appreciated. There was a lot of strength displayed while trying challenging and new activities. Memories of a life time were made that everyone will cherish forever, even the faculty found it to be a fantastic.
This morning senior Bridges students, Eamon and Dashiell presented their "Going Green Program" to all high school and middle school students. Dashiell and Eamon created this program as part of their Bridges Internship. Going Green is a recycling program where we teach students about recycling and how we can do our part of saving the planet that we live on. During the assembly, they asked students to take responsibility for the waste they produce, put it in the proper bin, and pick up after themselves and others. They also shared an alarming statistic, that America produces 268 million tons of waste and that the average American produces 4.4 pounds of waste each day!!! For many years, we have been making the planet more harmful by throwing waste in the wrong bins. It’s important to put them in the right bins to make our environment cleaner and healthier.
Students were engaged and learned a lot about proper waste disposal. For homework, we challenged students to go home and have a discussion with their families about waste disposal. They were also informed that each city or service provider has their own specific rules about what goes in which bin and that they should print up the specifications for their own city and post it somewhere accessible in the kitchen.
Students asked us to share the handouts and presentation with their parents so you can find those below. Shout out to Eamon and Dashiell for their hard work and initiative to help Stanbridge do its part for our planet!!! Going Green Handout Coordinating with Santa Clara County High School music program, Stanbridge enjoyed a hip visit from cool cat performers that range from 9th-12th grade. This Jazz Ensemble entertained all of us with their style, talent, and well executed versions of a variety of Jazz tunes. It was wonderful to see how music speaks to out community as even some of our littlest audience members bopped and tapped their feet to the rhythm.
Then it was time to shift gears to the raucous fund-a-need auction, led by our own Jay Huston in a dazzling red suit. We are so grateful for the people that make up our community, the gift of coming together in person is now appreciated on a level that was only made more significant over time and the shared experience of living through a pandemic. Thank you to all who came out for this evening together, you are all a part of what makes this community as unique and wonderful as it is. What better way to bring in the season with a lovely musical courtyard experience! Our music classes are enjoyed by the whole school, students in K-12 get to try different instruments, explore different song styles and share all of it with the parent community. If you are a member of our parent community that would like to see the full video, the link is in the Bulldog Bulletin, or email Deena Riddle, Director of Advancement, for a link to the full performance. Just before we headed off for Spring Break, the week wrapped up with a hare-raising bingo competition chock full of prizes, team work and FUN! You might recognize this Stanbridge tradition adapted from our Fall game of Turkey Bingo, we have students that are total pros now at the bingo varieties we've shared and the REBUS word challenges. As our students become more expert players at these games, the competition gets more enthusiastic as they really hop on board with answers. The San Francisco Shakespeare Company returned to Stanbridge after a three-year hiatus. The SF Shakespeare Company's mission is to " make the words and themes of Shakespeare accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ethnicity, financial status or level of education. By lowering practical and perceptual barriers, we encourage broad participation in the arts and make these activities a part of community life." On Wednesday, Stanbridge high school had the pleasure of watching A Midsummer Night's Dream, the production that the company is currently touring. With the support of Michele, Harriet, Ben, and Cindy, our elementary students showcased their learning along with impressive artistic skills, growth, and more in Hayden Hall for our final Showcase. From log cabins to California topographical maps, the academics were represented equally to the arts as our impressive younger divisions displayed their educational journeys. Not to go unnoticed was the support that students gave each other as they cheered each other on, applauding each presentation with enthusiasm. Social-Emotional Learning at Stanbridge is not just a stand alone class, but it ties into all our subject learning, as well. The friendships that are nurtured here have a big impact on campus and at home!
After a great deal of preparation, dedication, and practice, practice, practice, our High School division was ready for their debut at the Showcase of Learning. Each student, in each division will have an opportunity to highlight their growth over the course of the year thus far. We began by welcoming parents (grandparents, aunts, and other family as well!) to campus to check out subject-level projects and learn about the experiences students are having as they gain skills, independence, and plenty of social-emotional growth. Our Seniors have gone so far as to create cover letters and resumes in Colleen McQuade's Bridges class. Students shared their perspective on the sometimes surprising learning journeys they've enjoyed here. Every subject was called a favorite at some point! Our teachers are clearly making it all happen with their love of teaching and honoring these students where they're at to make each subject approachable and enjoyable. This month, we are commemorating and encouraging the study and celebration of the vital role of women in American history.
Moms, you would be happy to know that many of them said their role model is you. Another board displays drawings and quotes from 21 women in history who have had a great impact on our world. It appears that Beyonce also admires her mother. She is quoted as saying "Your mother is a woman and women like her cannot be contained." Interesting fact: Sixty-three percent of women voted in the 2020 presidential election, compared to 59.5% of men. Women have voted at a higher rate than men in presidential elections since the 1980s. Women Power...It's Our Time! |
